Building the Digital Backbone for a Smart City
LuxTurrim5G ecosystem creates the digital backbone for a smart city. Our network of smart poles combines fast 5G connectivity, relevant data from a variety of sensors and a secure data platform to build new data-driven services. This helps cities to tackle the grand challenges regarding urbanization and climate change, boost sustainable development and enable their digital transformation to smart cities.
Building smarter and more sustainable cities require new ways of thinking from cities and city planners. The whole built environment and different city infrastructures are becoming digital and connected. There will be a vast opportunity to build completely new data ecosystems to create new data-driven smart city services. LuxTurrim5G consortium has released two white papers about designing a smart and sustainable city and creating data marketplace for a smart city. The first one answers the common questions that cities now ponder about sustainability and digitalisation and the second one touches upon the different types of data, stakeholders, and enablers and obstacles for the implementation.
The LuxTurrim5G ecosystem and its product offering were proudly showcased at the Expo 2020 Dubai. In March, the LuxTurrim5G ecosystem arranged a VIP event at the Expo to present the ecosystem offering, partners and solutions to a group of ecosystem stakeholders. Finnish innovations gained a lot of attention in Dubai Expo: Finland pavilion actually hit the mark of one million guests before the exhibition closes its doors on 31 March 2022.
The extensive joint development of LuxTurrim5G ecosystem led by Nokia has reached an important milestone, as the current development phase of the smart pole, data platform and related smart city services is successfully completed. The multi-disciplinary consortium of 26 partners has achieved together solid results showcased today in a webinar. The key elements, modular 5G smart poles, already exist as a pre-commercial product family serving the various needs of cities. Several digital services related e.g. to public safety, green last-mile logistics, autonomous transport and healthy living have been piloted and prepared for commercialization. Together with a secured data platform this all provides a holistic solution, the digital backbone for cities, helping them to turn smart and sustainable.

The extensive R&D phase of the LuxTurrim5G concept on smart poles and related infrastructure, data platform and marketplace and several data-driven services is soon completed and now it is time to look ahead. Join the webinar to learn more about our holistic solutions and offering for smart cities, and highlights of the joint development by several companies and research organisations.
Vaisala is a global leader in weather, environmental, and industrial measurements. Building on 85 years of experience, Vaisala provides observations for a better world, with space-proof technology even exploring Mars and beyond. The data gathered by Vaisala’s measurement instruments are used to power modern modeling tools that provide the necessary information for decision-makers and scientists at the global, national, and city-level in building a sustainable future. The new compact air quality sensor developed in LuxTurrim5G ecosystem collaboration extends the capabilities to gather accurate hyper-local data and utilize for a variety of smart city services.
Digital twin of the LuxTurrim5G smart city pilot environment was completed recently. As a 3D replicate of the real environment, it is an important tool for smart city planning, but much more than that. It allows rich testing of many functionalities of the network and serves well our joint development of various service concepts.

Smart technology offers new business opportunities and better services to citizens. However, its adoption in the urban environment involves legal balancing, since no relevant case law yet exists. The purpose and goal of the legal research in the project is to ensure the legal, safe and appropriate use of data in new business models, taking into account regulation related to data protection, telecommunications and other fields. The project studies and analyses regulation under national and EU law, as well as the established practice of courts, competition authorities and data protection authorities.
