One down, 14 to go – The first of the new smart poles installed in Nokia campus, Espoo

On Thursday 12th December the first one of the 15 LuxTurrim5G smart poles planned to the route from Nokia headquarters at Karaportti to Kera railway station was installed.

“This is an important milestone for our joint project. The new smart pole version is the first pre-commercial prototype which will give us important guidance and learnings when planning the productization of the smart pole concept towards a product family responding to emerging global need”, says Research Manager Pekka Wainio from Nokia Bell Labs.

The smart poles on the Kera route will include different configurations to support various services planned and needed. The new smart pole is designed by Tehomet and assembled by Orbis and includes for instances Teleste cameras and info display and Vaisala weather sensors.

This new smart pole is already the third version developed in the LuxTurrim5G ecosystem. It is based on a modular design, made from steel structures and designed for the real city environment in Espoo, Finland. Regarding manufacturing, one of the key issues has been cabling solution.

”As there is not much space within the poles, we have developed cabling and switching solutions which allows integration of the devices in a compact space, but also makes sure that the installation is easy”, says Jani Linna-aro, CEO of Orbis.

LuxTurrim5G smart light poles equipped with 5G radios, video cameras, info displays, and a variety of sensors will form a digital backbone of a city. They create fast connectivity and a wide sensor network which together give basis for new data-driven services. These are developed to respond the needs in cities regarding e.g. public safety, situational awareness, traffic guidance, autonomous transportation, energy efficiency or healthy living.

The following 14 smart poles will be manufactured and installed in the beginning of 2020 and the whole Kera route network is planned to go live before summer 2020.
