Public Transport Reportage Featuring Sensible 4 and Teleste

LuxTurrim5G partners at BBC live podcast series “People fixing the world”

Listen the special reportage by BBC on new innovations in Public transport and hear about the fresh developments of LuxTurrim5G ecosystem through examples by Sensible 4 (8:00 onwards) and Teleste (20:30 onwards) enabling new services for smooth transport and public safety.

Harri Santamala and Mikaela Henriksson from Sensible 4 took the reporter Claire Bates first on a ride with their GACHA self-driving shuttle bus at the LuxTurrim5G pilot environment at Nokia Campus in Espoo. This demonstrated the last and first mile transportation from Kera railway station to Nokia Headquarters. After this convincing experience they explained the possibilities on autonomous public transport describing their work on the software development for self-driving vehicles which guarantees smooth driving and safety.

“The self-driving technology has the potential to be more efficient and can play an important role both to create better service and reduce the costs of transportation”, says Harri Santamala, CEO of Sensible 4.

“There are several sensors outside the bus that can make it see and feel what happens around. We have also developed a system how our software can filter out effects of snow, fog and rain” explains Mikaela Henriksson.

Now there is a safety driver on board when driving in public areas, but the future plan is to have a remote control center where the safety driver can guide a fleet of self-driving buses.

Safety is important also outside vehicles. Teleste has developed smart and safe bus stops and a so-called Connected zone concept, creating safety zones within a city to improve public safety and feeling safe.

“The Connected Zone is based on geofencing and CCTV systems applied on bus stops. If feeling threatened a user can activate alarm on her/his mobile phone App. This shows alarm activation on the display at the bus stop and connects immediately to the operations center”, explains Jani Väre from Teleste.

“Feeling safe wherever you are is seen important. These technical solutions enable to fulfil this basic need of people”, he continues.

The LuxTurrim5G smart poles equipped with video cameras, various sensors and other devices in addition to 5G radios create a digital backbone for a smart city providing high-capacity connectivity with a wide sensor and data platform. This is the base for several data-driven services not only for effective transportation and public safety, but also e.g. for wider situational awareness, last and first mile logistics, new ways for urban planning and healthy living.
