Rumble Tools aims to create a fully autonomous drone system comprising of custom drone with tailored payload and peripherals as well as a docking station that charges the drone and handles data collection and distribution. Rumble Tools has already deployed drone systems to multiple sites, ranging from industrial site surveillance to border control.

A company consortium led by Nokia is targeting the global smart city markets, worth tens of billions of euros. The LuxTurrim5G ecosystem has just completed a one-of-a-kind piloting environment that boosts the development of new data-driven services for cities both in Finland and abroad. It covers the route from Nokia HQ Campus in Espoo, Finland, to the near-by Kera railway station. Comprising of 19 smart poles with the latest 5G technology and altogether 250 interconnected devices it brings super-fast connectivity and extensive sensor network available for practical piloting of digital smart city services.

Sensible 4’s software makes self-driving vehicles of all types operate smoothly and safely in changing conditions. The company has developed a unique LiDAR-based software built with state-of-the-art sensor fusion technology which makes self-driving cars operate safely in all weather conditions. Integrated as an operation system for the GACHA self-driving electric shuttle bus designed by Muji, Japan, this has been seen as a promising solution for the autonomous vehicles market. In the LuxTurrim5G ecosystem the GACHA robot bus is a key element both for studies to utilize the 5G connectivity for remote driving and acting as a moving sensor platform gathering data.

The latest news of LuxTurrim5G smart pole were discussed and showcased at the “Sähkö Valo Tele AV” exhibition in Jyväskylä last week. The event known as “Sähkömessut” gathered together about 13 000 participants interested in lighting, electric, telecom and audiovisual technologies. Tehomet showcased at their booth the exhibition version of the latest LuxTurrim5G smart pole design. This 4 m tall smart pole built for the exhibition include 5G radio, video camera and weather sensor.

Nokia, together with a multidisciplinary group of companies and research groups, is creating the digital backbone of the smart city and new data-based services. In the second phase of the LuxTurrim5G ecosystem projects, the recently developed 5G smart pole concept is moving towards productization and practical piloting. Another major goal is to create a platform utilizing a wide variety of data in a reliable and secured way and develop new digital services to meet real needs of cities. This includes also evaluating and piloting of a Neutral host operating model for high-speed city networks. Through a two-year, EUR 26 million, intensive co-development effort the group of 26 partners target the global smart city markets worth tens of billions euros.

After the successful proof-of-concept development phase of the 5G smart pole which integrates 5G base stations, weather and air quality sensors, video cameras, displays and other devices to light poles LuxTurrim5G ecosystem will now move on to the next level. The second phase, consisting of two highly interlinked projects (LuxTurrim5G+ and Neutral Host Pilot) and bringing together +100 key experts of 26 partner organizations in active joint development, was kicked off beginning of September. A key target of LuxTurrim5G+ (already confirmed funding by Business Finland) is now to prepare the smart pole concept for productization and wider pilot implementations both in Finland and globally.

Nokia Bell Labs driven industry group is building key enablers for fast 5G network based on smart light poles, which will form the digital backbone of future smart cities. The LuxTurrim5G ecosystem project has developed the 5G smart pole concept where 5G base stations, a variety of different sensors, video cameras, displays and other devices have been integrated to light poles. This creates a novel platform providing fast, low latency mobile communications and possibilities to exploit huge amount of data to make new digital services for smart cities. The solutions have been piloted already during last two years at Nokia Campus in Espoo, Finland, and now the plans are to expand the piloting to real environment in Kera region of Espoo.

Students and developers all over Europe took part in the 48-hour hackathon at Aalto University in Espoo. Over 100 students and developers participated in the IoThon hackathon to create new 5G enabled IoT innovations. The most popular challenge was set by Nokia: 17 out of 27 teams developed new digital services and business opportunities for smart LuxTurrim5G light poles.

The LuxTurrim5G Smart Light Pole concept, based on 5G small cells integrated to smart light poles together with selected sensors and related services, have been demonstrated in field trials. Recently two new versions of integrated Smart Light Poles have been built and implemented as part of the test network at Nokia campus in Espoo, now consisting of four smart 5G light poles in operation, smart bus stop, active displays, electric car charging unit and a separate weather station.
